With memories of summer vacations beginning to fade around the edges, it’s a good time to consider the Highlands Historical Society’s Dazzlin’ Dahlia Show, set for 1:00 to 5:00 P.M. Saturday, September 10, at the Highlands Recreation Center at 600 North Fourth Street.
Exhibitors can bring their flowers on Friday evening, September 9, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. or on Saturday morning from 8:00 to 10:00 A.M. The registration fee is $10 per exhibitor. Children 17 years old and younger are urged to enter their blooms in the Youngsters Only category.
Plan now to view all the beautiful dahlias from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Admission to the show is $5 per person with all proceeds going to support the many civic projects of the Highlands Historical Society. The winner of this year’s “Best in Show” blossom will be used for the publicity for the 2017 event. Don’t forget to pick up one or two flower arrangements for your home and some for your friends, too.
This year’s dahlia expert is Jody Zahner, owner of Chattooga Gardens. Jody will share tips about growing the prettiest dahlias beginning at 2:00 P.M. Following Jody’s talk, stick around to get tips from local arrangers on how to incorporate dahlias along with other flowers in both small and large arrangements.
Before you head home, you’ll want to stop by the Prince House at the HHS Village for refreshments and to enjoy the music of Les Scott on his Appalachian dulcimer from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M.
