This month athletes from around the world will gather for the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
In the spirit of this worldwide sporting event, children from around the area will gather at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 13, at The Village Green Commons for some fun and competition in the Cashiers Wacky Olympics.
“It will be a gold medal kind of day for the community,” says Ann Self, Executive Director of The Village Green.
Participants will enjoy a number of Olympic-themed activities and challenges. Kids can compete in games like the Dizzy Discus, Jolly Javelin, Silly Shot, and a “marathon” style race through The Village Green. Other relay race events and an Olympic torch-making craft will also add to the fun of the Wacky Olympics. The Cashiers Wacky Olympics is a collaboration between Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cashiers, the Boys and Girls Club of the Plateau, and The Village Green.
The Village Green provides other ways to play, too. Yet, despite the popularity of the park, many people don’t realize that The Village Green is privately conserved and maintained for free enjoyment by a nonprofit organization. The Village Green receives no government funding for its operation and relies on the generosity of individuals to ensure the park is enhanced for the benefit of everyone.
