A Huge Plate of Yum

Scaly Mountain is a small community making a big impact.

Fourteen women organized a club in 1988 to help local students fulfill their dreams of a higher education.  Through charitable work and contributions, these amazing women established a Scholarship Fund.  Today, that organization, known as the Scaly Mountain Women’s Club has grown to over 90 members and awards over $18,000 annually to several local full-time college students.

In addition to working year-round, near and far, the SMWC has three main fundraising events throughout the summer and fall − Pancake Breakfast, May through September; Annual Auction in July; and Chocolate Fantasy in October.

May marks the start of the SMWC’s famous Pancake Breakfast at the Scaly Mountain Historic School House, 41 Buck Knob Road.  Opening day is May 27 and will continue every fourth Saturday of the month through September.  Breakfast is served from 7:30A.M until 10:30 A.M., featuring buttermilk pancakes, with local blueberries optional, local Blalock sausage, orange juice, and fresh coffee, all for only $6.  All proceeds support the scholarship fund.

Congratulations to this year’s scholars −  Whitney Billingsley, Gabi Conway, Miranda Conway, Emily Gabbard, Kyle Gabbard, McKinley Moseley, Lindsey Sidey, Tasha Thrumon, and Kassie Vinson.  Pancake Breakfast Co-Chairmen Barbara Anderson and Laura Haner hope to surpass the record-breaking attendance from last year.  Let’s help them do it and support these amazing students!

Save the Date − Sunday, July 16, Sky Valley Country Club.  The Scaly Mountain Women’s Club’s Annual Live and Silent Auction just got bigger and better! Auction Chairman Barbara Bannon and her committee have been working throughout the year to bring some of the biggest live auction items to date.  In addition to the fabulous items the committee already has, a few new ones were leaked: A European River Cruise for two, a three-night stay on a Private Island in the Bahamas including air transportation, a hunting camp for six in Argentina, front row hockey tickets for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Stay tuned, there’s much more to come.
