Sponsor a BBBS Camper
Jaida, on drop off day at Camp Tekoa

It’s time for camp!  And Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cashiers and Highlands are sending 15 children to weeklong, overnight camps this summer.  This experience provides participants the ability to join in rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, white water rafting, character building, teamwork, and much more.

The kids go to various camps in North Carolina, and they’re able to select their experience based on their preferences for activity and location.

In prior years, parents and Littles said that camp was one of the best experiences they have had.  Parents have marveled at how much growth, maturity, and independence they have witnessed upon the return of their camper.  These are characteristics that are core to the program’s values and goals to support children to reach their full potential in life.

One of our Littles, Katy, said that leaving camp was hard.  Even though she was nervous about going to camp and being away from home for a whole week, she cried on the last day because she wasn’t ready for the fun to end.

BBBS needs donor support to accomplish the task of sending Littles to camp.  This is the greatest expense of the program, but proves to be a rewarding and worthwhile use of donations.  If you would like to sponsor a child to go to camp, donations can be made to BBBS of Cashiers or BBBS of Highlands.

In addition, we’re also looking for volunteers to be a part of our program through mentoring.  We want to grow our programs in order to serve those that can benefit from having a mentor in their life by providing friendship, role modeling, and guidance.  In Cashiers, our program is currently serving 23 children ages 7-16.  The Highlands program is smaller and attempting to rebuild, but currently is serving four children.  Mentors are vital to helping us expand to serve the needs in our community.
