Highlands has always had its share of famous authors visiting or living in the area like Sandra Brown, Ron Rash, Cassandra King, and Pat Conroy.
Have I dropped enough names to get your attention? However, for the last twenty years there has been a steady group of lesser-known wanna-be’s who simply like to write and meet on Thursdays at The Hudson Library at 1:30 P.M. We welcome writers of all ages and stages.
In the beginning, Anne Doggett, Marda Burton, Linda Anderson, Tony Chambers, and J. Jay Joannides got the group going and finally, Linda Anderson, our present leader, decided it was time to publish our very first anthology. Linda is the author of several books, most recently “So Late So Soon.”
The writers in our group sent in submissions and J. Jay Joannides did the eclectic art throughout the book and on the cover.
The anthology is dedicated to Anne Major Doggett. Anne was born in Anderson, South Carolina, the mother of seven, and taught writing at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. Anne first came to Highlands with her grandparents. She and her husband, Lewis, fell in love as children horseback riding in Highlands and eventually moved here full time. Anne now takes a back seat, but for many years, she was the inspiration, encourager, and backbone that kept us together.
We are proud to host a Hot Off The Press Party and book signing at The Ugly Dog Pub from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. Friday, May 12. Come… Sit… Buy a Book. We’ll have wine and cheese, a short dedication and a few readings. Perhaps, if you drink enough wine, you’ll take a book home or give as a gift. Don’t forget Mothers Day is on Sunday. Proceeds from the book go to The Hudson Library.
