Meritage is only two blocks from Highlands’ Main Street, but it’s easy to imagine this little charmer existing on a languid boulevard in Montmartre. It has that casual, beguiling elegance.

Here’s the thing – Fried Brussel Sprouts, once you get past the absolute improbability of the existence of such a thing, are wonderful. They’re spicy, and oh so crisp, and incredibly addictive. It’s easy to imagine snacking on them while you’re conversing with a friend.

So score one for Taylor, and score one for an unheralded vegetable.

One of us ordered the Autumn Beet Salad. It was beautiful with purple and golden beets harvested from the Asheville Farmers’ Market.

Further reason to trust your server – one of our party is of the opinion that beets taste like dirt. She was coaxed into trying just a little bite. Her socks went up and down – she was a woman in love.

This is another of Andrea’s holdovers from her time with Wild Thyme. She’s committed to buying local whenever possible, and the results elevate her menu. The freshness is undeniable and it elevates her menu choices immeasurably.

For entrees we were served Pan Seared Scallops, Marinated and Grilled Tenderloin, and the Grilled Farmer’s Chicken Breast. These were extraordinary.

I’ve run out of space to tell you more about Meritage Bistro. Let me just say three things. The place is only two blocks from Highlands’ Main Street, but it’s easy to imagine this little charmer existing on a languid boulevard in Montmartre. It has that casual, beguiling elegance.

Order dessert at Meritage. Trust me. Trust Taylor.

And any time you’re dining out, share with your companions. It’s a simple luxury that turns any meal, every meal, into a little
party. Honest.
