DESCRIPTION:Bark-To-Basket Workshop is exclusive to May through July\, when bark can be easily removed while sap is moving nutrients from the roots to the upper parts of trees like poplar\, sweet gum and cedar. \nIn this class\, actual poplar logs will be brought in and students will be instructed in how to remove\, fold and begin to dry a piece of bark. They will take this unfinished basket and other supplies home to complete on their own. \nNext\, students will be provided a pre-removed\, folded and dried poplar bark basket. They will use the preform to construct a basket (attach handle\, rim supports\, etc.)\, and have the opportunity to add various embellishments. \nEach student will take home their completed basket. \nAges 18+. DESCRIPTION:Cashiers Historical Society- Mountain Heritage Series “Making Their Mark: The Women of Biltmore Estate” \nWhile it is easy to tell the story of George Washington Vanderbilt at Biltmore Estate\, buried just under the surface are the stories of the female residents of Biltmore House\, Edith Vanderbilt and Cornelia Vanderbilt Cecil. From the late 1890s to the 1930s\, Edith and Cornelia shaped not only the estate on which they lived\, but the wider communities in which they were active. Born in different eras and yet united by an abiding love for Western North Carolina\, this talk will examine the Vanderbilt women’s involvement in the social\, philanthropic\, and public life of the region with an emphasis on how society perceived them—and how they perceived themselves. \nMeghan Forest-Singeris Associate Curator at Biltmore Estate\, where she has worked for seven years. Her graduate work at the University of Oxford (Kellogg College) fostered a passion for uncovering stories of those that may otherwise be lost to history. The group: Caleb Smith (guitar\, vocals)\, Tim Surrett (bass\, dobro\, vocals) Alan Bibey (mandolin\, vocals) and banjoist Marc Pruett—is not only releasing new music\, but once again are hitting the road\, touring majestic theaters and backwoods gatherings—all in the name of bluegrass music. 2026 also brings a special guest on board to many shows across the nation\, Kentucky native Don Rigsby. On fiddle and vocals\, Rigsby brings that familiar “high lonesome sound” to the mix and is backed by an impressive resume\, making him a seamless addition to the group. Formed in 2007 by mere happenstance\, Balsam Range came together during an informal kitchen jam session in the rural depths of Western North Carolina.
