DESCRIPTION:(FREE) Meet and talk with woodworking artist Larry Ricci during the Gallery Walk in July. \nOne of the greatest gifts Larry ever received was when his dad put tools in his hands when he was a kid. He was later inspired by the sculptural furniture of artist George Nakashima and visited the Nakashima studio often in the years that followed. After a 40+ year career in education\, he began working mostly with local\, highly figured hardwoods and burls to create unique pieces of art that maintain the organic beauty of the wood. The wood\, with its shape\, figure\, imperfections and voids\, is what draws his attention and curiosity. Sometimes the imperfections are what creates the greatest interest in studying the piece. Larry always attempts to balance form and function\, but sometimes one of those wins out.

DESCRIPTION:In this class\, we will create a beautiful blank journal using Paired Needle Coptic Stitch\, which is a specific form of Coptic binding that uses multiple needles and multiple threads. Your journal will have a lovely chain stitch at every sewing station\, and it will be structurally strong and highly functional.  \nAll materials and tools will be provided\, so you can arrive empty handed and relax into the experience. If you already have personal bookbinding tools and find them most comfortable\, please feel welcome to bring along. For the book covers\, I’ll have a variety of decorative papers to choose from including Nepalese Lokta\, Indian cotton\, Japanese Chiyogami. If you prefer your own decorative paper\, please feel welcome to bring along (for space and efficiency\, please pre-cut the paper to 8.5” x 11”).  \nAll skill levels welcome.

We’ll cover everything you need to know about using polymer clay from the basic equipment and tools you need\, to conditioning the clay\, color bending\, forming\, curing\, and finishing your pieces. SUMMARY:2 Day Polymer Clay Workshop with Diane Kuehn at The Lucy Clark Gallery & Studio
DESCRIPTION:Come explore your creativity with Diane Kuehn with this step-by-step workshop where you will learn to build a layered\, textured pendant or brooch with a variety of techniques using polymer clay. We’ll start with a color palette pleasing to you and then learn some surface design and embellishment techniques to design your one-of-a-kind pendant. You will also learn how to assemble your pendant and incorporate the mechanisms for doing so. \nAt the end of the workshop\, each participant will have at least one pendant or brooch completed. Time allowed\, students can create more than one piece. \nThis workshop is suitable for all levels. Those without polymer clay experience should take the Fundamentals of Polymer Clay workshop on July 17th to gain basic knowledge of working with polymer clay. \nAll supplies and use of instructor’s equipment and tools are included in price of the workshop so all you have to do is show up.

DESCRIPTION:(FREE) Meet and watch Holland Van Gores apply milk paint to his incredible wooden sculptures. \nHolland has spent the better part of his life working with wood. As a child\, he had access to his father’s workshop and was able to use the tools and supplies. Learning these skills early in life\, led him to choose a career in construction where he honed his skills in California before taking on construction work in remote Costa Rica and eventually the United States Virgin Islands. Holland and his family relocated to western North Carolina in 2012 where he built a studio surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest. He is constantly experimenting with forms and textures\, often inspired by organic themes. “Making something with my hands allows me to feel a connection to that piece\, giving it a purpose.”

SUMMARY:2 Day Polymer Clay Workshop with Diane Kuehn at The Lucy Clark Gallery & Studio
DESCRIPTION:Come explore your creativity with Diane Kuehn with this step-by-step workshop where you will learn to build a layered\, textured pendant or brooch with a variety of techniques using polymer clay. We’ll start with a color palette pleasing to you and then learn some surface design and embellishment techniques to design your one-of-a-kind pendant. You will also learn how to assemble your pendant and incorporate the mechanisms for doing so. \nAt the end of the workshop\, each participant will have at least one pendant or brooch completed. Time allowed\, students can create more than one piece. \nThis workshop is suitable for all levels. Those without polymer clay experience should take the Fundamentals of Polymer Clay workshop on July 17th to gain basic knowledge of working with polymer clay. \nAll supplies and use of instructor’s equipment and tools are included in price of the workshop so all you have to do is show up.
