ArtSpace at First Presbyterian Church in Highlands is a living testament to the community’s creative spirit. Each season, the church walls become a gallery for local artists, fine crafters, and friends of the congregation. The mission is to create space for the visual arts that celebrates the Holy Spirit’s gifts of creativity and imagination. Here, art is a bridge, deepening connections with one another and with the Divine, inspiring creativity, and nurturing faith as art speaks to the soul beyond words.
The ArtSpace Committee, a group of volunteers, juries each show with a focus beyond technical mastery. They seek works that embody heart and spirit, resonating with ArtSpace’s mission. The gallery is open to everyone—children, amateurs, and seasoned artists alike. The requirements are original or reproductions, ready to hang, and appropriate for all ages. Any medium is welcome: paintings, photography, fabric art, ceramics, woodwork, and more. Up to four pieces may be submitted, space permitting, and the committee curates exhibits to ensure harmony and inspiration.
Exhibits are celebrated with a community reception, often after a Sunday service, as artists and visitors mingle over refreshments. Shows remain open during regular office hours for anyone to experience art’s transformative power. Sales are handled directly between artists and buyers, with no church commission—donations are appreciated to support future exhibits.
To participate, submit a photograph of each piece with a submission form, preferably by email, so the committee can review and share entries. If needed, submissions can be delivered or mailed to the church. The next exhibit opens December 7, and anticipation builds for new perspectives that will grace the walls.
For an Artist Submission form, contact FPCHKelley@gmail.com. Submit the form and photographs in the same email. You will be notified when jurying is complete. Dates are on the submission form.
“We find it preferable for artists to submit their form and photographs via email so we can share with committee members,” says Pastor Kelly Connelly. “If that is not an option, you may deliver it with a photograph to the church at 471 Main Street in Highlands; or mail the information to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 458, Highlands, NC 28741.”
If you have questions, contact Pastor Connelly at FPCHKelley@gmail.com. ArtSpace is a celebration of creativity, faith, and community—a place where everyone is invited to share their vision and be inspired by others.
