This past spring marked a meaningful moment in Summit Charter School’s story – one that speaks not only to growth, but to the steady, community-rooted effort that made it possible.
In May, Summit graduated its fifth high school class. At the same time, the school celebrated another milestone: members of Summit’s very first graduating class, the Trailblazers of 2022, have just now completed their college degrees. It’s a full-circle moment for a program that was still taking shape not too long ago.
Summit began as a K-8 school in 1997, founded by families who believed that a small, place-based public school could offer something truly special for this community. For many years, eighth grade marked the end of a Summit education. But in 2018, that began to change. With the addition of ninth grade, and then one grade each year to follow, Summit thoughtfully expanded into a full K-12 program, graduating its first senior class in 2022.
Those early high school students helped define what Summit could become. They navigated new territory without a dedicated high school building, and without the long-established traditions, yet with a shared sense of purpose and possibility. Their path helped shape the experience that students now enjoy today, including the opening of Summit’s dedicated high school campus in the 2024-25 school year.
Now, with five graduating classes and a growing alumni community, Summit stands as a fully realized K-12 educational option for families across the Cashiers-Highlands Plateau. And still, at its core, it remains what it has always been: a school built by, and for, this community.
This season is a reminder that meaningful growth doesn’t happen all at once. It is built year by year, class by class – through the vision of those who begin something, and the commitment of those who carry it forward. As Summit looks to embark on its 30th year of education this coming August, we continue to sail onward and upward!
