Horses and Summer Days

As summer begins, Carpe Diem Farms welcomes Boys & Girls Club campers for hands‑on time with the horses and the start of a new season of learning.

We blinked, again, and now it’s June!

School is out, graduations and summer jobs are what’s happening.

At Carpe Diem Farms it’s time for summer programs!

The participants of the Boys and Girls Club of the Plateau are beginning their camp time with the horses of Carpe Diem Farms. For several years we have had a terrific partnership, and it continues. Many of the children have never experienced horses before so it’s a wonderful learning experience for all.

Summers are one of my favorite times of the year. The longer days give us that much more time to play with the five horses.

Journey, our Shire, just celebrated his fifth birthday in April. Shires are the first of the large draft horses. They are also the largest of the drafts and are on the endangered species list with only 3,500 remaining in the world. Journey’s personality reminds me of “Marmaduke” the cartoon dog. He is the official greeter when anyone visits the farm.

He and our 34-year-old mini, Pumpkin, love to spend time together grazing with our other big boy, Kaleb. I’m really not sure if they have any idea the difference in their sizes, they just enjoy their own unique friendships.

We welcome visitors to the farm. We do appreciate it if you call to make an appointment for a visit: (828) 200-9725. We operate on a schedule, feeding at 8:00 A.M., noon and 3:30 P.M., and close for the day at 4:00 P.M.

Carpe Diem Farms, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) educational foundation, “Exploring the Human Potential Through Equines.” We have been doing this work with the horses since 1997.
