Across Cashiers, Highlands, Sapphire, and Glenville, Fourth of July weekend takes on a character all its own, with each community adding its own traditions, rhythms, and sense of place to the celebration.

Here, the holiday stretches across an entire weekend, moving from village greens and resort grounds to the open water of Lake Glenville. What I’ve always loved about these gatherings is the way they reflect a distinctly mountain version of patriotism – live music on the lawn, families gathered on blankets, children chasing one more game or sweet treat, and boaters turning the lake into a floating sea of red, white, and blue. The settings may change, but the spirit feels wonderfully familiar: neighbors and visitors coming together in ways that are festive, joyful, and deeply rooted.

This year, Cashiers gets the weekend off to a spectacular start on Friday, July 3, with its annual Fireworks Extravaganza at The Village Green from 6:30 to 10:30 P.M. It’s the kind of evening that brings everyone out – there’s live music, good food and drink, plenty of laughter, and family fun all building toward the fireworks at dusk.

Sapphire Valley Resort brings its own lively spirit to the holiday with its annual Yankee Doodle Dandy Day on July 4 from 10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.

This cheerful tradition is packed with activities designed to bring families and friends together for a full day of fun. From the ever-popular ducky derby and live music to games, contests, pony rides, a petting zoo, and a kid’s fun zone, there’s something here for every age. Add snow cones, popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers, and plenty of laughter, and it all comes together as the kind of classic all-American celebration that feels both festive and warmly communal.

Highlands kicks off its Fourth of July celebration with a full day of family-friendly festivities beginning at 9:00 A.M. at the Ball Field. The celebration includes games, the beloved Duck Derby, a free hot dog lunch hosted by the Highlands Rotary Club, and plenty of small-town traditions, patriotic spirit, and community gatherings throughout the day.

That evening, Southside Station takes the stage at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park at 6:00 P.M., followed by a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the Highlands sky.

For a complete schedule of Highlands Independence Day festivities, see page 18.

Then on Sunday, July 5, the holiday weekend concludes in unforgettable fashion with the Friends of Lake Glenville’s annual Gala Boat Parade and fireworks over Lake Glenville. Launching from The Pointe just north of Trillium at 8:00 P.M., the parade invites boaters to go all out, decorating their vessels in patriotic style worthy of America’s 250th birthday celebration.

As darkness settles over the water, the Fireworks Over Lake Glenville begin at 9:30 P.M., reflecting across the lake in a breathtaking wash of color and light. Whether you watch from shore or from the deck of a boat, it makes for a beautiful ending to a weekend devoted to freedom, community, and the simple joy of gathering together. It’s also a fitting continuation of a tradition these communities have cherished for years, with Cashiers and Glenville looking to the sky – and across the water – for a finale as grand as the mountains themselves.
