The Wandering Hours
By mid-August, Cashiers has a sound all its own: the hush of the mountains at evening, the murmur of neighbors settling onto the lawn, and, on Friday, August 14, the bright, rootsy lift of The Wandering Hours tuning up on the Commons Stage.
The August installment of Groovin’ on the Green welcomes the Tampa Bay-based string band for a free concert from 6:00 to 8:30 P.M. at The Village Green. It’s an evening tailor-made for lawn chairs, picnic blankets, coolers, and the easy pleasure of hearing handcrafted music under the open sky.
Formed in 2018, The Wandering Hours bring an original, spirited approach to traditional American string music. Their sound draws from old-time, early bluegrass, and folk, blending fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, and upright bass into songs that feel both timeworn and fresh. The band writes its own material in that tradition while also honoring important songs and tunes from earlier eras, creating a set that can pull in devoted string-music fans and first-time listeners alike.
What makes them such a natural fit for Groovin’ is the way their music moves. There is lyrical depth in the storytelling, but also a danceable pulse that keeps the evening light on its feet. One moment may carry the sweet ache of a mountain ballad; the next may tumble forward with the communal energy of a front-porch jam. Their songs look backward with reverence, then lean forward with warmth, wit, and momentum.
That balance has earned The Wandering Hours a growing reputation beyond Florida. They have shared bills with nationally known roots and bluegrass artists and have appeared at festivals across the region, carrying with them a sound that feels as comfortable in a listening room as it does on a summer lawn.
For Cashiers, that means a night with plenty of texture: close harmonies, nimble picking, sturdy bass lines, and melodies that seem to drift naturally into the mountain air.
As always, Groovin’ on the Green is free and takes place rain or shine on the Commons Lawn. Food and beverage vendors will be available, and concertgoers are welcome to bring their own picnics and coolers. Please bring lawn chairs and blankets; well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome (children do not need to be leashed). Personal tents are not allowed, though 10×10 tent rentals are available for groups, with proceeds helping support The Village Green’s nonprofit programming.
