Margie Bauer, a botanical and scientific illustrator, “zendoodler,” fabric artist and a teacher in watercolor, pen, fabric art and mixed media, works out of her studios in Cashiers and Coral Gables, Florida.

When she chooses her subject (oh, so hard to narrow it down!), the hardest part is figuring out the most whimsical way to get people as excited about our natural world as she is. Is it from a hand-dyed fabric that she has quilted, a zentangle, a gelli plate creation, dried plant specimens, or a watercolor? She loves to hear the stories and memories that her work invokes in others, especially when it puts a smile on their face.

Her art enters her gardens as well, where she creates focal points to highlight the beauty and wonder of nature. A new pond lined with mosses and native plants just for frog tadpoles and salamander larvae; a root ball of a fallen tree “painted” with the flowers of native vines; or, a garden full of milkweed in Coral Gables where the year-round monarch butterflies and caterpillars are used to teach the neighbor children and their parents the monarch’s life cycle.

Ms. Bauer, an ALHC member, will be the guest speaker at the August 24 Art League meeting at The Bascom. Social time begins at 4:30 P.M., with the monthly meeting and presentation following at 5:00.

She’s taught art classes through Western Carolina University, University of Miami and many other venues, including Cashiers Quilters, Half-Mile Farm, and Fusion House. Ms. Bauer exhibits at the Art League of Highlands-Cashiers events and at the Bascom. With the Tropical Botanic Artists group in Miami, she exhibited at more than fifty venues in private galleries and national, state and local parks. Her artwork is available at many retail outlets in south Florida and the Smoky Mountains region.

We hope you will be able to attend this free presentation, which promises to be both entertaining and instructive. Who knows, you may learn a new art form during the presentation? For more information about the Art League, visit artleaguehighlands-cashiers.com.
