The Southern Appalachians have always rewarded the curious. Look closely at the forest floor, the edge of a stream, or the brief flash of a hummingbird at a blossom, and an entire world of interdependence begins to reveal itself.
This September, the Village Nature Series invites the community to look more closely still.
On Tuesday, September 15, naturalist and storyteller Luke Cannon will present Appalachian Wonders and Phenomenal Ecological Connections, a free, family-friendly program from 5:30 to 6:30 P.M. inside Lewis Hall at The Village Green in Cashiers. Presented by The Village Green and Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust, the evening will explore the surprising adaptations and intricate relationships that animate the living world around us.
From orchid seeds to hummingbird tongues to zombie ants, Cannon’s stories illuminate the hidden connections binding species to one another and the habitats they share. In his hands, ecology becomes less a distant science than a lively, immediate way of seeing place.
Cannon has spent more than 25 years pursuing and teaching the natural world. He has led classes, walks, and workshops, drawing on deep ecology, permaculture, survival skills, homesteading, animism, and experiential education. He has taught for organizations including the North Carolina Arboretum, Blue Ridge Audubon Society, Asheville Botanical Gardens, and Organic Growers School.
In 2011, Cannon founded Astounding Earth, an educational endeavor dedicated to helping people cultivate closer relationships with the Earth, and in 2020 co-founded the Sacred Naturalist School. Today, he lives in the North Carolina mountains, where he studies and teaches Appalachian ecology through courses, walks, talks, and expeditions.
The Village Nature Series fosters discovery through programs exploring wildlife, conservation, habitats, and cultural heritage. Programs are free, family-friendly, held rain or shine, and require no reservations.
