The Highlands Biological Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Leslie Manning as its new Executive Director.
Manning began her role on August 3, leading the organization as it continues to provide environmental education, support scientific research, and foster community connection throughout the Highlands‑Cashiers Plateau and beyond.
She brings nearly two decades of nonprofit leadership and development experience to HBF. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to building thriving communities, strengthening organizations, and cultivating meaningful relationships with donors, volunteers, and community partners.
Most recently, Manning served as Regional Development Officer for Pisgah Legal Services. Prior to that, she was Executive Director of the Counseling Center of Highlands, a nonprofit providing free mental health services to the community. Earlier in her career, she led an Alabama nonprofit for nearly 10 years, developing extensive experience in organizational leadership, fundraising, strategic planning, and community engagement.
“Leslie brings a unique combination of leadership experience, fundraising expertise, and passion for our mission,” said Tom Holmes, President of the Highlands Biological Foundation Board of Directors. “She has already demonstrated her commitment to HBF through her service on our Board of Directors and Strategic Planning Committee. We are excited to welcome her as Executive Director and look forward to the vision and energy she will bring to this role.”
Manning is no stranger to the Highlands Biological Foundation. As a member of the Board and Strategic Planning Committee, she has helped shape the organization’s future direction and growth. She also has a personal connection to HBF through her daughters, who attended the Foundation’s Nature Camps, giving her firsthand insight into the impact of its educational programs.
“I am honored to join the Highlands Biological Foundation as Executive Director,” said Manning. “HBF plays a vital role in connecting people to the natural world, supporting scientific discovery, and inspiring future generations of environmental stewards. I look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff, Board, donors, and community partners to build on the Foundation’s strong legacy and continue expanding its impact.”
The Foundation also extends its gratitude to outgoing Executive Director Jamie Creola for her dedicated leadership. During her tenure, Creola helped guide a new strategic plan, strengthened community partnerships, enhanced operations, and positioned HBF for continued growth and success.
