Bounty of Mountain Harvest

John Keats called this the “season of mellow fruitfulness.” See and sample its bountiful harvest at Highlands Marketplace – Saturday mornings at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park.

Crisp and brilliant are two words that come to mind when thinking of both fall colors and the weather in the mountains this month.

They also perfectly sum up what’s available at the Highlands Marketplace in autumn.  Over the summer shoppers have been delighted with the abundance of choices at the local farmers’ market in Highlands, and that doesn’t stop simply because it’s getting a bit colder.

Most Saturdays through the end of the month, the Highlands Marketplace will be setting up at Founders’ Park on Pine Street between 8:00 A.M. and noon.  It’s a good idea to arrive early to make sure you get the best choices in produce, baked goods, flowers, and much more.  Bring your shopping basket and load up on local eggs, fresh breads, handmade crafts, and local honey.

Obviously, spring fruits and vegetable aren’t going to be around but how about some of those delicious cold weather crops?  Beets, potatoes, cabbage, kale, and squash, are perfect for creating hearty soups and stews; while pumpkins, apples, and rich golden honey tempt the palate with the idea of fritters, baked apples, and of course, pies, cakes and muffins.  Don’t want to wait for those baked goods?  Stop by and visit bread bakers and pastry chefs who can satisfy your sweet tooth with instant gratification.

It’s certainly not too early to think about holiday gift-giving and the Highlands Marketplace offers everything from jewelry and handmade hats and scarves to fine art, photography, and wood crafts. Why not give a gift that’s made right here and one of a kind?

Highlands Marketplace is a great place to see friends and neighbors who, no doubt, have already scoped out their favorite vendors and have planned their meals around the bounty of the mountain harvest.
