Spinal Stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal usually caused by degeneration of the spine.
Stenosis is more common in those over age 50 and can be associated with injury or degenerative change in the spine. The spinal canal is made up of mostly bone and cartilage. The spinal disc material, designed to cushion the spine, can begin to fail and protrude either inward into the canal or outward into the small passages that allow the spinal nerves to exit the
main canal.
Either way, when these canals are compromised, this can cause increased pressure and compression of the neural tissue. Many symptoms can result, including pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, or all of the above. Sitting or leaning forward slightly can usually offer relief from pain but that pain is usually exacerbated by standing for long periods of time.
Spinal stenosis can also result from the biomechanical changes that occur after certain injuries. No matter the original cause, the progression of spinal stenosis must be slowed or surgery might be the only option.
Understanding the root cause of stenosis is important for treatment options. Because inflammation often accompanies the pressure on the spinal cord and tissue, reducing inflammation is one of the most important things to do.
The best way to treat stenosis naturally is through a combination of acupuncture, spinal decompression, nutrition, and exercises to strengthen the spine. Core strength is vitally important for slowing the progression and staying comfortable.
It’s also important to keep your weight at a normal level. Too much belly weight will increase the potential for pain and progression of the problem. Keeping yourself on an anti-inflammatory diet at all times and keeping yourself healthy is the best prevention and treatment plan.
Even though some forms of spinal injections can possibly give you temporary relief, the best plan is to work on good health, good fitness, and less weight – you may be able to stave off spinal surgery!
