Corbett’s Acoustical Sounds

The electrifying lessons of a winter’s night in 1964 have shaped Jim Corbett’s entire life.

Written by: Donna Rhodes

February 9th, 1964 Jim Corbett sat glued to the family TV. It was tuned to the Ed Sullivan Show. When Sullivan introduced the Beatles, Corbett was awestruck. He knew then and there music was his destiny.

He begged for a guitar. Accompanied by his parents he went to Sears and bought a $49 Silvertone. He signed up for lessons at Sal’s Music Store in Blackwood, New Jersey. He says, “From there I joined a group, The Purswaders, and toured the country as the featured band of the World of Wheels Auto Show. We played at fantastic venues like the New York Coliseum, Philadelphia Convention Hall, and Charlotte Coliseum.”

He was only 15, already rubbing elbows with the likes of Herman’s Hermits and Les Paul. Les Paul was so impressed with the band’s sound he was instrumental in getting them a record deal with
Mercury records.

Those were his glory days and everything he performs today is influenced by them: Jim Croce with his soft rock, jazzy folk; America; the British Invasion led by The Beatles; Creedence Clearwater; The Eagles; Jimmy Buffett; and more. He says, “I feel privileged to have grown up in what I considered the greatest era of music, the 60’s & 70’s thus the name of my show: Jim Corbett’s Acoustical sounds of the 60’s & 70’s.”

Corbett writes some of his own material and recently produced a CD of originals. One of his favorite compositions was created for his daughter’s wedding.

He performs at private functions, the Great Outdoors Resort in Franklin (holidays, chilling-out nights), The Main Street Inn Highlands, The Old Edwards Club and other venues.
