All HANDS For Christmas

Christmas in Highlands is like no other. Even if there’s no snow on the ground, the sense of community blankets the town with a glittering layer of generosity. So many charitable people donate to the many nonprofits to help those less fortunate, especially at this time of the year.
HANDS. Highlands Area Non Profit Donation Sharing, is one of many organizations that lend a helping…well…hand, here. They are organizers of the annual Christmas Day Dinner at Highlands Country Club.
In years past, no restaurants were open on Christmas Day, so a group of like-minded citizens came together and volunteered to cater and serve a full dinner to residents and visitors alike. All monies were then distributed locally through HANDS.
Since that first meal in 2001, the tradition has grown by leaps and bounds and continues to attract not only diners, but volunteers as well. For many who choose to spend their Christmas Day serving this feast to others, it’s something they look forward to all year round, so it’s not just the guests who are cheery, but the servers, too.
Organizer Laura Huerta is now in her 11th year of involvement. Huerta, owner of Lakeside Restaurant, started as a volunteer back in 2007 and says, “It’s truly been a blessing to watch so many families expand, grow up, and start their own families.” She admits that shopping is not something she enjoys doing, but “…this dinner has become my tradition over the years and it’s a wonderful feeling to share Christmas with so many people I’ve come to know.”
They will be serving traditional holiday foods like turkey, ham, roast beef, and all the trimmings, along with a new addition: shrimp and grits. All the delectable homemade desserts make a perfect ending to the relaxed and festive atmosphere.
