Showcasing Local Art Talent

The Town of Highlands celebrates its annual Highlands Arts and Crafts Show on Saturday, October 12, from 9:00 A. M. until 4:00 P.M. at the Highlands Civic Center at 600 North Fourth Street. Admission and parking to this event are free.
From its ever-so-humble beginnings nearly 40 years ago when The Highlands Woman’s Club envisioned it as a way to showcase local talent, to today’s show which features artisans from throughout the south, this show is one you won’t want to miss.
Though it’s grown throughout the years, it retains its small town appeal and feel, and in fact several vendors have been participating since the beginning. Highlander Jodie Zoellner and her college friend Martha Hawthorne enjoy a reunion every year at their booth featuring their homemade goodies and craft items. Jodie’s Oatmeal Sourdough Bread is a bit of a legend, and her jams and jellies feature the best of our local bounty – blackberries, raspberries, peaches and strawberries. Martha’s goodies bring an additional flair with ingredients from further south. Pear preserves, anyone? Both say it’s the fun that keeps them coming back year after year, and they enjoy seeing the familiar faces of customers who return year after year to snatch up their favorite items before they are gone.
“Mimi” Lin Johnson of Mimi’s Mountain Mixes of Hendersonville is newer to the show but loves this event because, “This is a show that has ample parking for the customers, plenty of quality crafts people and is in a beautiful setting. There is so much to do in Highlands and the people are very welcoming. And the visitors are from all over the country. They are looking to take something home from the mountains. And, who can blame them?” Her renowned bread mixes allow you to take something home to bake later.
There is always a wide selection of arts and crafts of every imaginable kind – woodworking; fine handcrafted furniture; Christmas wreaths, ornaments and gifts; woven items; items in stone and clay; paintings; drawings; handcrafted knives; jewelry; candles; scarves and other textiles; hand blown glass; woodworking; pottery; and, so much more. Gardeners also share their home grown flowers and botanicals.
