On Friday, October 31, Highlands’ Main Street will shed its everyday charm and don a delightfully spooky disguise. For two magical hours – from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. – the 2025 Downtown Trick or Treat celebration will turn the town into a candy-coated carnival of cobwebs, costumes, and community cheer.

Hosted by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce/Visit Highlands, NC, this beloved tradition is far more than a sugar sprint. It’s a full-on Halloween jubilee where families, visitors, and shopkeepers unite in a shared love of whimsy and sweets. Think of it as a costume party with a civic twist – where the ghosts are friendly, the goblins are pint-sized, and the fairies sparkle with local flair.

Main Street will be closed to traffic, giving costumed critters of all ages free rein to parade between storefronts dressed to impress. Local businesses go all in – transforming into haunted hideouts, enchanted groves, and pumpkin-spiced wonderlands. And yes, the merchants themselves often join the masquerade, handing out treats with theatrical flair. Whether you arrive as a glittering unicorn or a suspiciously lifelike slice of pizza, you’ll be met with smiles and sweets at every turn.

What began as a safer alternative to door-to-door trick-or-treating has grown into a Highlands hallmark. Parents love the well-lit, walkable setup. Kids love the candy and the thrill of seeing their town turned into a Halloween dreamscape. And everyone loves the sense of neighborly magic that floats through the crisp autumn air.

Keeping things safe and spirited, Highlands’ finest — Police, Fire and Rescue, and a merry band of volunteers—will be on hand to offer high-fives, pose for photos, and maybe even break into a spontaneous dance or two. Rumor has it a friendly monster might make an appearance, so keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready.

There’ll be complimentary hot dogs and hot chocolate to keep everyone fueled and frisky, live music by ABC Combo and High 5, and DJ Mike Murphy will be manning a turntable in the middle of Main Street in front of Town Square.

(Editor’s Note: At some point, DJ Mike will be spinning Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” In years past, there’d be a zombified flash mob that’d add a note of flash to the evening by recreating that iconic dance scene. With Covid, that spirit seems to have departed, but if you’re willing, unleash your inner undead and shuffle through the motions. If others join in, we may have restored a cherished part of the party.)

This year’s celebration carries extra sparkle, as it folds into Highlands’ 150th anniversary festivities. It’s not just a night of tricks and treats – it’s a tribute to the enduring heart of the Plateau.

So dust off your broomstick, fluff your tail, and join the revelry. Everyone’s invited – kids, grown-ups, and even the “recently departed” (who, according to Police Chief Andrea Holland, will be considered “living” for the evening). Just remember: dogs, dragons, and giant spiders must be leashed.

Whether you’re a Highlands regular or a curious newcomer, Downtown Trick or Treat promises a night of laughter, sugar highs, and memories worth haunting forever.
