The First Presbyterian Church of Highlands will honor Angie Jenkins at a reception following the 11:00 A.M. worship service on Sunday, June 12.
Mrs. Jenkins has served as the church’s organist for the past 40 years.
Her musical talents became obvious at an early age when her grandmother, Mrs. Lizette Lewis, began giving Angie lessons on the piano. Two other ladies from the church recognized Angie’s musical abilities and supplemented her grandmother’s lessons. Mrs. Edwina Summer (her husband was principal of Highlands School) and Mrs. Mary Dupree (wife of the pastor) wanted to be sure that there would be someone to fill their shoes at the church when they were no longer there.
Mrs. Summer decided that nine-year-old Angie and two of her classmates would share the duties of playing piano for the Sunday School classes. Soon the other two lost interest, but Angie continued. She practiced diligently and expanded her training to the organ. Angie began playing piano at the worship services while Mrs. Dupree played the organ. Several years later when Mrs. Dupree and her husband moved from Highlands, Angie was asked to assume the role of organist/pianist.
Join the members of First Presbyterian Church for a celebration of Angie’s talents and her service.
