A High-Flying Job

Outdoor activities and a perfect summer climate bring thousands of visitors to our area. The seasonal impact on employment puts a strain on employers and employees; but with more and more visitors recognizing the benefits of the “off season,” this is becoming less of a problem.
One of the area’s most popular attractions, Highlands Aerial Park, has found the balance between year-round and seasonal staff. They primarily use local residents who can adapt their schedules to the required flexibility of last minute demand dictated by weather and holidays in the “off season.” During the high season, they supplement that core staff with local summer workers. Each spring, the new associates, generally one-third of the staff, receive the professional guide training certified by the industry. This approach has minimized employee turnover and secured a work force that garners praise from their guests. Of the over 300 five-star Trip Advisor reviews, the great majority mention the staff by name and recommend the park based on their personal interaction with their guides.
The staff, in turn, love their job. Most have outdoor experience beyond zip lines. Climbers, hikers, paddlers, campers, all with certifications in zip line guiding, first aid, and CPR. Training as first responders, EMTs and wilderness rescue instills confidence. Botanical interests and knowledge of local history answer the questions of the curious. Most importantly, dedication to safety while keeping the tour fun with laughing all the way makes a day in the mountains with new friends an experience to remember for guests and staff.
