The Perils of PPIs

Proton Pump Inhibitors are popular drugs to treat peptic ulcers, GERD and indigestion.   These strong anti-acids – Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix, Prevacid, and Aciphex – have also been associated with osteoporosis, heart arrhythmias, intestinal infections, bacterial pneumonia, and multiple nutrient deficiencies.  A new study from Stanford University on PPIs says they can double the risk of dying from a heart …

Breast Cancer Awareness Highlands-Cashiers Hospital

Dr. Julie Farrow recently gave a breast health lecture and couldn’t stress enough the importance of proper screening.  Dr. Farrow practices at the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital in the Jane Woodruff Building and offers complete gynecological services to women in the area.  Dr. Farrow said that the major risk factors for breast cancer in women are age, genetic predisposition, and estrogen exposure.   …

Monte Vista, Part II

Beyond the dining room was the kitchen with a wood burning stove, the kitchen sink, and above the sink was the “pie shelf,” a screened alcove to the outside where vegetables could be kept cool.  Upstairs were additional bedrooms and half way up the stairs was a shelf where the oil lamps were stored.  No bathrooms and no plumbing; water …

I Aint Forgot You

Taxation is an aggravation to everyone statewide, but it’s been a particular sore spot to those on the Plateau.  In the 1970s Highlands residents felt that their properties were being disproportionately taxed.  To make matters worse, there was an inequity in representation, reminiscent of the Boston Tea Party’s slogan: No Taxation Without Representation. Short of dumping oolong in the Cullasaja, …

October Rescue Mission

Ahhhhh.   October has arrived.  Cool days, cold nights.  Blazing shades of red and yellow against the azure Carolina blue skies.  Sitting by the hearth with a good book and conversation, the sound of the leaves rustling underfoot on a mountain hike. What’s not to love about October? I referred to the Old Farmer’s Almanac for some of these tips, …

Green Heron

This is a small, stocky, short-necked heron with bright yellow legs. It is solitary and stealthy and can be seen along wooded streams and ponds where it hunts small fish in the shallows. It roosts and nests in trees. The call is a loud SKEEW or skeow.

40 Pounds of Spitfire

Early regional settlers called him the Woods Ghost and Ol’ Spitfire.  Today we call him the Bobcat, so named for his short tail. If you’re unfamiliar with this critter, you should know Bobcat is not a nickname for Robertcat. But out of respect you might call him Mister Cat for he is a formidable predator with razor-like claws and athletic …

Rusty Patched Bumble Bee

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed listing the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee for federal protection as an endangered species this September. The Rusty Patched Bumble Bee has plunged in abundance and distribution by more than 90 percent since the late 1990s.

Classic Chunk Shot

Some of the ugliest shots I’ve ever hit and seen golfers attempt is the full shot out of a  fairway bunker. The margin of error is much smaller than hitting the same-length shot off of grass. After many years I finally figured it out. You don’t take your normal golf swing which   has you driving your legs through. In …

The American Crow

This large venerable bird is widespread and common in North America, a large passerine or songbird, second only in size to the equally venerable Common Raven.   Crows like what people like, clearings with surrounding trees.  They are omnivorous and will eat anything from insects to eggs to small animals and carrion.  They like our diet and go through our garbage …

Biergarten Bash

When you hear the word, “Oktoberfest” you immediately think beer and brats, right?  If so, you certainly wouldn’t be wrong; although at Old Edwards Inn and Spa in downtown Highlands, Oktoberfest is so much more.  What better place to celebrate this iconic festival than their European-style retreat in the mountains of North Carolina?  The rich brick and stonework of the …

Wine Defined, Food Divine

Autumn is a time of transformation, as the greens of summer morph into the show-stopping colors of fall.   So, too, has what was previously known as Highlands Culinary Weekend, transformed into the Highlands Food and Wine Festival, a three-day party held November 10-13. The new name speaks of the reimagining of this weekend as a festival for all celebrating food, …
