At its September 28 meeting, the Art League is delighted to have as the guest speaker former ALHC member Missy McIver, a talented artist who works in a variety of mediums. Social time begins on The Bascom Terrace at 4:30 P.M., with the meeting starting at 5:00 P.M.
Born in Bronxville, New York, Missy’s first artistic love was photography, which she took up after graduating from Smith College and moving to Palo Alto, California to work in the Art Library at Stanford.
Her first camera was a 35 mm Asahi Pentax. Her heroes were photographers Cartier‑Bresson, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, and Diane Arbus.
On a trip to Mexico, Missy took black‑and‑white photographs of people and places that she shared with Leo Holub, the photography instructor at Stanford. He became a mentor to her and introduced her to darkroom techniques. Mr. Holub also included her work in a show attended by Imogen Cunningham and Ansel Adams. It was a peak experience for her to have them single out her work. She spent a year studying large and small photography formats at California College of Arts and Crafts.
With her decision to pursue a professional career in psychology, her photography was relegated to pictures of friends’ weddings and the images she captured as she traveled.
In 1992, Missy moved to South Carolina, and her travel itineraries became more varied and exotic.
Her constant travel companion was her camera, by that time digital, and she visited and captured images from around the world. Morocco, India, Laos, Myanmar, Bali, Ethiopia, Mongolia, and Africa called to her. Many of those images were on display at an exhibit in Columbia, South Carolina — an exhibit she refers to as her “Grandma Moses work.”
In addition to photography, Missy has dabbled in oils, pastels, encaustics, and gelli printing by enrolling in several classes at The Bascom.
