On Sunday, September 13, at 4:00 P.M., the Highlands Performing Arts Center will once again be transformed into a sanctuary of sound as the 34th annual Bel Canto Recital takes center stage. For more than three decades, this beloved event has enchanted audiences and uplifted the community – raising more than $900,000 to support The Bascom, fund scholarships, and nurture music education in local preschools and public schools.
This year’s program promises an unforgettable afternoon, featuring five world‑class vocalists whose artistry has graced opera houses across the globe.
Ashley Milanese, a lyric soprano with a voice described as “velvet” and capable of “heart‑stopping soft effects,” brings a résumé that includes performances with the Metropolitan Opera, Sarasota Opera, and the LA Philharmonic. A graduate of The Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music, her presence is as radiant as her tone.
Abi Levis, a fearless mezzo‑soprano with a dazzling vocal range, arrives with accolades from Berlin to Toronto. Her performances span the Mirror Visions Ensemble to Opera Philadelphia, and her academic pedigree – Eastman, Houston, and Bard – speaks to her musical depth.
Christopher Bozeka, a tenor with a “beautiful, piercing tone,” joins the lineup following his Metropolitan Opera debut. His voice has lit up stages from New York to Houston, weaving magic in both concert halls and opera houses.
Brian James Myer, a handsome, charming, stage‑savvy, and polished baritone, follows with a presence as compelling as his sound. He has captivated audiences around the world with his rich, buttery, and velvety voice. His opera credits are innumerable, and he is in high demand as a recitalist.
Matthew Anchel, a commanding bass praised by The Wall Street Journal as “a voice to watch,” brings more than a decade of experience with the Met and a solo debut at Carnegie Hall. His rich resonance anchors the ensemble with gravitas and grace.
At the helm is Dr. Stephen Dubberly, Bel Canto’s guiding maestro for all 34 years. His musical stewardship has become inseparable from the recital’s heart and soul.
