Art League of Highlands

Spring has finally arrived, and the Art League of Highlands-Cashiers is gearing up for the 2015 season.
The first meeting of the year will be held at The Bascom on April 27. Social time is at 4:30 P.M. with the presentation at 5:00 P.M.
One of the aims of the Art League is to support emerging area artists. Mark Price, an acrylic painter, is just such a person.
Art League President Pat Calderone found him almost by accident. She read in The Highlander that Dana Fresa had recently opened Roosters Café at 460 Main Street in Highlands and was looking for local artists to hang work in the establishment. She visited the café to determine if it would be a good match for ALHC members to display their work. A large selection of Mark’s work was already on display, and she was so drawn to it that she contacted him to arrange a face-to-face meeting. Price, who owns a business in Glenville, met with Pat the same day, bringing more examples of his work.
She found him to be very art-savvy and well-spoken. Born in California, Price has been involved with art from early childhood, winning poster and art contests from early elementary school through high school. He received an art scholarship to college, but instead of pursuing it he purchased an established business, got married and raised a family. Later in life he returned to his art, and over the last decade he has traveled and painted, focused on creating his personal style and studying master artists from around the world.
Bold, energetic brushstrokes on large canvases characterize Price’s paintings, reflecting his approach to life. While impressionistic in style, his subject matter is easily recognizable. Frequently the viewer feels that they know the person in a painting, and the facial expressions and body language evoke an emotional response. The colors often represent emotion rather than reality, giving his work a faintly surreal edge. We hope you will join us for Price’s presentation.
