Throughout the summer, applause can be heard reverberating along the walls of the Highlands Playhouse.  This summer season’s theatre line-up has included “Chicago,” “A Grand Night for Singing,” “Steel Magnolias,” and “Piano Man.”

August begins with “Steel Magnolias,” a valentine to the joys and heartache that shadow a circle of friends. The show focuses on the women of a small Southern town as they cope with life through the daily news passed along at Truvy’s Beauty Salon.  The 1989 film adaptation of “Steel Magnolias” achieved classic status thanks to the powerful performances of Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts.  This American classic runs from August 4 to August 20

Finishing out the Playhouse’s summer season is the musical revue entitled “Piano Man.”  This rock and roll musical includes songs from the world’s most popular musicians, such as Billy Joel, Elton John, Neil Sedaka, and Barry Manilow.  The show’s music spans over four decades and transcends generations.  Plan to attend one of the riveting performances between August 25 and September 4.

When the stage lights dim, the Playhouse’s movies begin.  For the summer, movies play Sundays at 5:30 and 8:00 P.M., as well as Mondays and Tuesdays at 2:00, 5:00, and 8:00 P.M.  Remember to check the Playhouse’s website (highlandsplayhouse.org) to see the current movie offerings each week or call the box office at (828) 526-2695.  Theatre tickets can also be reserved by calling the Playhouse box office.
