Mountaintop Rotary’s 20th Annual Art and Craft Festival kicked off the summer with a fun-filled weekend in June as more than 5,000 visitors gathered to browse the work of over 120 of the Southeast’s most talented artisans. Add in live music, children’s performances, hands-on activities, and the ever-popular Sip and Stroll, and it was easy to see why this festival has become one of Highlands’ favorite traditions.
The good news is the fun isn’t over yet. The festival returns to Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park on Saturday, August 29, from 10:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. and Sunday, August 30, from 10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.
If you’ve attended before, you already know what makes this event so special. If you haven’t, this is the perfect opportunity to discover why it’s become a can’t-miss weekend on the Plateau.
Newcomer Julia Hunt of Julia’s Fine Art in Black Mountain, North Carolina, captured Best in Show honors in the juried show with her soft, whimsical textured oil paintings. Hunt said she was especially impressed by the festival’s festive atmosphere, where visitors of all ages were enjoying themselves, and by the community’s enthusiastic support of the arts. She also appreciated the warm welcome she received from Highlands.
Local artists and organizations are represented as well.
Jessica Lammers, retail manager for The Bascom, says, “This is such a wonderful event for Highlands with so many talented artists participating. We also appreciate the opportunity to introduce people to The Bascom and represent some of our artists in the heart of the community during the show.”
The crowd-favorite Sip and Stroll returns Saturday from 1:00 until 6:00 P.M., featuring wine and local brews from Western Carolina Brew and Wine. Food will also be available.
Entertainment begins Saturday at 11:00 A.M. with PAC Educational Theatre performing scenes from its hit production of Shrek, The Musical. Mick Mayer performs from 1:00 until 3:00 P.M., followed by Lisa Rankin from 3:00 until 5:00 P.M. On Sunday, The Standard Elevation Trio brings its smooth jazz sound to the park from 1:00 until 3:00 P.M.
Families won’t want to miss the expanded Kids’ Zone, featuring free hands-on activities including the Teddy Bear Hospital, creative projects, more than 30,000 LEGO bricks for budding builders, and Taylor Swift-inspired pop bead bracelets to make and take home.
Admission is free, although donations are always appreciated. As Mountaintop Rotary’s largest fundraiser of the year, proceeds support local youth programs, making this a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a weekend of art, music, food, and family fun while giving back to the community.
