Each winter, the creative energy of Mountain Theatre Company travels to New York City in search of the artists who will bring our summer season to life.
This year’s NYC auditions were nothing short of electric – a true testament to the growing excitement around our work and the original productions taking shape for the Highlands stage.
More than 500 performers submitted for consideration, representing talent from across the country. From those submissions, 120 artists were invited to in-person callbacks, where the room buzzed with anticipation, artistry, and the kind of collaborative spirit that defines MTC.
The dance callback was especially dynamic, featuring two distinct combinations created by me, our resident choreographer: a Fosse-style intricate jazz routine, and a disco-inspired partnering combination that tested musicality, connection and sportsmanship. Dancers leapt, spun, and supported each other with both technical precision and joyful abandon – a thrilling preview of the movement audiences can expect this summer.
Beyond the choreography and vocal runs, what stood out most was the people. Executive Artistic Director Scott Daniel shared, “At Mountain Theatre Company, we’re not just looking for exceptional talent – we’re looking for exceptional people. The rehearsal room matters. Kindness, collaboration, and generosity of spirit are just as important as a high belt or a perfect double turn.”
That philosophy was on full display throughout the audition process. We were especially excited to see many familiar faces among the hopefuls – alumni who have previously graced our stage and returned eager to create with us again. Their continued interest speaks volumes about the artistic home MTC strives to provide.
As we prepare for a summer centered on new and original works, these auditions mark the first step in building something truly special.
Casting original productions requires vision, trust, and a willingness to explore. It means finding artists who can originate roles, shape characters from the ground up, and collaborate closely with the creative teams. And this summer’s productions promise to deliver vibrant storytelling, infectious music, and the unmistakable magic of theatre in the mountains. Dancin’ in the Street pulses with rhythm and movement, blending dynamic choreography with a high-energy score that celebrates connection and joy. SHOWSTOPPERS! delivers powerful musical moments that will linger long after curtain call.
Tickets are now on sale and we invite you to be among the first to experience these original works as they make their debut live on stage at the Highlands Performing Arts Center. Join us this summer and witness the extraordinary talent – and extraordinary people – who will bring these stories to life. Tickets and more information can be found at mountaintheatre.com.
