The June meeting of the Art League will be held Monday, June 29, on the terrace of The Bascom. The public is invited to attend. Social time begins at 4:30 P.M. with the meeting beginning at 5:00 P.M. This month’s guest speaker will be ALHC member and watercolor artist Rebecca Horowitz.
Rebecca graduated from the University of South Florida in 1975 with a BA in Fine Art, a double major in ceramics & serigraphy and a minor in Art History. That same year, she had the opportunity to move to Israel, and for two years she was Artist-In-Residence and taught ceramics, sculpture, and karate at Beit Hanoar Ha’ivri, as well as outreach instructor for the City of Jerusalem.
Upon returning to Florida, commercial art led her down another career path. After working for a few leading advertising agencies, she started her own business. This afforded the opening for artistic and professional growth. Involvement with the local American Advertising Federation chapters provided a platform for creative and nonprofit management recognition. Local, state and national advertising competitions recognized her efforts in illustration, creative concept, and copywriting with a number of awards over that period, among them the Florida Public Service Association: Golden Image Award and the Pinellas Suncoast Advertising Federation Advertising Person of the Year.

Rebecca Horowitz
Creative problem solving is a challenge and opportunity she enjoys. Upon retiring in 2022 to her childhood home in Highlands, she took up the new challenge of learning watercolor painting. The medium had always fascinated her. She says, “The unexpected, seemingly uncontrolled blending, energy, and happy accidents that happen during the process are a visual representation of life’s journey. With watercolor, you get one chance with each brushstroke, and one chance with each sunrise.”
Her style has been illustrative to date, however, she is working on a new approach that should produce more energetic imagery. Her goal is to create art that honors and highlights the magic of the Nantahala natural wonders. Contributing to the critical need for environmental awareness and conservation guides her efforts.
Her art is currently at The Uptown Gallery, Franklin; Gallery 441, Dillard; and at The Highland Hiker and The Business Spot, Highlands. We hope you will be able to attend Ms. Horowitz’ presentation. To learn more about the Art League, please visit artleaguehighlands-cashiers.com.
