One of the Highlands Cashiers Players’ favorite traditions is that of presenting a free holiday show for community as a way of saying thanks for our support all year and as a way to spread holiday cheer as only live theater can do.
This year’s show will be an especially lively one as Highlands Cashiers Players are celebrating their 30th anniversary with a 1940s-style radio theater production of a shortened version of It’s A Wonderful Life, adapted by Joe Landry. There are almost 40 parts in this reading, and they have gathered actors and actresses who have appeared in their many productions over the years together to bring this show to life.
Take a step back in time with HCP as this beloved holiday story unfolds on stage as actors stand before vintage microphones, scripts in hand, bringing the characters of Bedford Falls to life with their voices, while a clever crew of sound effect artists creates the magic of ringing bells, rushing wind, breaking glass, and footsteps in the snow. You’ll feel as though you are part of the golden age of radio as you watch the story of George Bailey and his guardian angel Clarence unfold in real time. It’s a nostalgic, charming performance that captures the true spirit of Christmas, reminding us all that every life touches countless others and that, indeed, it’s a wonderful life.
During ‘commercial breaks’ in the radio theater, live holiday music will be provided by the Highlands Horns Trio whose performance is made possible by a grant from Macon Arts Council.
Following the show, guests will be invited to stay for cake and champagne (a departure from the usual cookies and cider in honor of the 30th anniversary) served by the Saint Lucia Bride, a Scandinavian hospitality custom often observed during the holidays. Families are encouraged to attend–nonalcoholic beverages will be provided for children.
The Holiday Show will take place on Tuesday, December 16, at 7:00 P.M. in the Martin Lipscomb Theater at the Highlands Performing Arts Center. Admission is free, and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis, so early arrival is encouraged.
