On July 10, the Highlands Performing Arts Center came alive as Mountain Theatre Company welcomed supporters from across the Highlands‑Cashiers Plateau and beyond for Spotlight 26: A Summer Block Party – an unforgettable evening of celebration, community, and philanthropy. Inspired by the music, style, and spirit of
Dancin’ in the Street, the organization’s signature annual fundraiser proved to be one of the most exciting and successful Spotlight events to date.
Designed as a modern reimagining of the traditional gala, Spotlight 26 immersed guests in the summer of 1978, transforming the theater into a vibrant, multi‑environment experience. Rather than simply attending an event, guests became part of the story.
The evening began in The Sunset Lounge, a nostalgic 1970s‑inspired basement retreat where local guitarist Mick Mayer set the mood with live music, while guests enjoyed handcrafted cocktails and an elegant selection of passed hors d’oeuvres. From there, the celebration flowed into The Soul Street Party, where glowing lights, Motown classics, chef‑curated food stations, and signature cocktails recreated the joy and energy of a neighborhood summer block party.
The night’s grand finale arrived as the doors opened to Avenue 54, where the stage of Dancin’ in the Street was transformed into a dazzling disco dance floor. Under shimmering disco balls and synchronized lights, guests danced alongside members of the Dancin’ in the Street cast as live vocal performances blended seamlessly with iconic hits from Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, and more. Interactive Spotlight bracelets pulsed in rhythm with the music, turning the theatre into a sea of light, movement, and celebration.
While the evening was filled with incredible food, music, and unforgettable moments, its true purpose reached far beyond the party.
As Mountain Theatre Company’s largest annual fundraiser, Spotlight directly supports the organization’s mission to produce professional theatre while expanding access to the arts throughout the region. This year, 100 percent of the proceeds benefited Mountain Theatre Company’s Community Club in partnership with Cullasaja Women’s Outreach, ensuring students across Jackson, Macon, and Rabun counties can experience live theatre free of charge while helping local families enjoy affordable, Broadway‑caliber entertainment close to home.
