This spring, The Bascom: A Center for the Visual Arts presents three exhibitions that explore how artistic knowledge is shaped through mentorship, teaching, and material inquiry.
Emergence, the Winter Resident Artist Exhibition, and the Bascom Instructor Showcase together offer a layered view of creative exchange across generations and disciplines.
In the Bunzl Gallery, Emergence places mentorship at the center of contemporary art education. Featuring 35 faculty and student artist pairs from 30 higher education institutions across the Southeast, the exhibition reveals how instruction and collaboration give rise to both technical rigor and creative exploration.
Spanning a wide range of media, the works reflect a balance between foundational skills and experimentation, illustrating how artistic ideas are continually refined and reimagined through shared practice.

Ships We Keep
In the Thompson Gallery, Ships We Keep, a site-specific installation, by sculptor and educator Casey Schachner, The Bascom’s 2026 Winter Resident Artist is on view. Drawing inspiration from ships in bottles and coastal souvenir culture, Schachner examines themes of place, identity, preservation, and memory. Her inflatable, larger-than-life sculptures reinterpret familiar maritime icons through humor and material contrast, softening objects traditionally associated with permanence and authority. Developed during her winter residency through The Bascom’s Winter Resident Artist Program (WRAP), the work reflects a deliberate shift from Schachner’s customary stone, glass, and metal practices toward experimentation with inflatable forms.
Completing the spring season, the Bascom Instructor Showcase in the Joel Gallery highlights the work of visiting artist educators whose creative practices shape the foundation of The Bascom’s workshops and classes. Featuring works across multiple disciplines, the exhibition examines the reciprocal relationship between teaching and making while offering insight into the perspectives students encounter in the studio.
The public is invited to a spring exhibition reception on Saturday, March 21. The afternoon begins with an artist talk by Casey Schachner at 2:00 P.M., followed by a reception at 3:00 P.M., welcoming visitors to engage with artists, instructors, and the ideas that define The Bascom’s spring season.
