Studio Alive

The year marks an ambitious string of accomplishments for an energized Art League of Highlands-Cashiers.

The Art League of Highlands-Cashiers’ 2016 season has been a successful one, evidenced by the number of new members, the quality of presentations, continued participation with The Bascom in the Summer Art Camp for children, two successful fine art shows, and the expanding benefits and programs offered by the Art League.

The 2016 presentations were given by a series of painters with varied styles and mediums, starting with newcomer Mike Price in April working in acrylics; followed in successive months by watercolor artist Pamela Haddock; abstract artist Leslie Jeffery; and classical portrait artist and author Cynthia Kinard.

In August The Bascom’s Community Artist in Residence, Kristina Rose Baker, presented her paintings in oil enhanced with earth materials, and in September former Bascom Acting Director Sallie Taylor discussed her photorealistic oil renderings.  All of the programs were well-attended and well-received.

During 2016 the Art League’s website artleaguehighlands-cashiers.com continued to evolve and now is beginning to showcase members’ artwork and link to members’ websites.  The Summer Colors Show in Sapphire Valley and the Fall Colors Show in Highlands were once again well-attended, with the number of Fall Colors exhibitors up by more than 30 percent over 2015.

The Bascom has graciously supported the Art League by providing a venue for its presentations as well as Art League Board meetings, and they have earned a big “Thank You.”  The Bascom staff has gone above and beyond to support the Art League’s efforts.  The community is blessed to have such a first-class facility
and organization.

In October, an exciting new partnership with The Bascom kicked off.  “Studio Alive,” a program started locally many years ago by artist and lifetime Art League member Catherine Christie, brings together interested artists of all skill levels to draw or paint from a live model.  Studio Alive currently meets each Wednesday at the Hudson Library.  Now The Bascom has also welcomed Studio Alive in its downstairs Adult Studio the first Monday of each month for current or prospective Bascom members.  There is no class fee, only $5 to share in the cost of the model.  More information about this can be obtained by contacting Penny Bradley at (706) 782-3685, jwptbradley@windstream.net; or Cindy Vickery at (828) 743-1632, csvic@bellsouth.net.
