The owners of Vivianne Metzger Antiques are always looking for new sources to enhance their fabulous inventory of 19th century English and French Antiques. They continue to be the most extensive source of period antiques on the Cashiers/Highlands Plateau. With a 2000-square-foot warehouse full of furniture, lighting, and unusual items, the shop and warehouse are always full of treasures to explore. In 2018, they decided to expand their search to Scotland. Several dealers and customers had mentioned villages to check out and it provided a wonderful excuse to tour the beautiful countryside of Scotland.
Their trip by car took them through many interesting towns and villages, including Glascow, the islands of Mull and Skye, Inverness, Aberdeen, Perth, St. Andrews and, of course, Edinburgh. It is difficult to describe how beautiful the countryside is and the friendliness of the Scotts. The best antique sources were in the area of Abernyte and Rait. There they found old buildings converted to interesting antique malls with multiple dealers. Then there were the storybook villages of Little Dunkeld and Pitlochry. They offered so many charming places to stay. Several castles and large country homes were just a few of the fun places to stay.
The search was very productive and gave them confidence that there are good sources for period antiques in Scotland which could supplement their finds in England. Vivianne Metzger Antiques is celebrating their 21st year in Cashiers, and is located at 31 Canoe Point off Valley Road. The shop is open Monday through Saturday 10:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. through Thanksgiving.
Vivianne offers these tips for keeping your antiques fresh:
1. Mix Things Up – Don’t have too many pieces that look alike; mix eras and cultures.
2. Give Older Pieces New Life – Juxtapose them with overtly contemporary fabric.
3. Balance large pieces with lighter pieces.
4. Comfort is an Important Consideration – Always ask a dealer to let you try items in
your home.
5. Placement – Careful placement of antiques in uncluttered rooms highlights them.
