In the year of America’s Bicentennial when Gay Townsend and business partner Paulette Crabtree opened Sashay Around, styles were very different from today. Floor-length gowns with padded shoulders were standard evening wear. On the other end of the spectrum the hippie subculture influenced fashion with its cutoffs, bell-bottoms, and mini-skirts. Fashion was experiencing extremes. Jeans were not acceptable office or on-the-town wear. There was no comfortable middle ground for 40-somethings unless a leisure suit had appeal.
Fast forward to 2018. New fiber discoveries offer lightweight, wrinkle-free, breathable options. Today’s jeans are an acceptable choice for nearly every occasion. Shoppers are less concerned with formality and more interested in comfort and easy care.
While online shopping is tempting, there are three important reasons why a local boutique like Sashay Around is a much better choice:
1. Real sales people will take an interest in your look, help you find colors that match your skin tone, and suggest fit-like-a-glove selections for your unique body-type and preferences.
2. It’s a place to experience up-close-and-personal the fabric’s texture, its give and stretch, its actual color, and the feel of the cloth next to your skin.
3. All sizes are not uniform. You can’t step into the computer and try on a dress. You have to wait for shipping. If the garment doesn’t fit, you have to wait for return mail, and then a new size has to be sent. Meanwhile, the occasion for which it was needed has passed.
