Celebrating Satulah

You can see it from many spots around Highlands: Satulah Mountain, standing tall like an old friend watching over us, a silent constant in an ever-changing world.
On September 27 and 28 you’re invited to participate in the fourth annual Satulah-Bration, a community celebration to thank you for your support and to honor the first property Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust conserved over a century ago as well as all the places throughout Macon and Jackson County that have been conserved since.
In 1909, a group of concerned citizens raised $500 to protect the summit of Satulah, ensuring it would remain in its natural state in perpetuity as a public park for all to enjoy.
On September 30 of that year, the organization that eventually evolved into Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust officially took ownership of the summit. Since then, HCLT has gone on to conserve over 3,000 acres of valuable land resources in Highlands and Cashiers and has earned the distinction of accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission.
Satulah Mountain Preserve has become a community treasure and on the last Saturday in September HCLT will host their fourth annual Satulah-Bration! You’re invited to come Satulah-brate all the gems your Land Trust preserves – such as Sunset Rock, Brushy Face Preserve, Dixon Park and more!
This year’s festivities will kick-off with a free guided hike to the Preserve on Friday, September 27. No reservations are necessary. Simply meet at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park in downtown Highlands at 10:00 A.M., bring your lunch and water and enjoy a roundtrip guided hike to the summit. Plan to be back around 2:00 P.M.
Then on Saturday, September 28, come to Founders Park for the Annual Chili Cook-Off from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M.
Be a Contestant: entry forms are online at hicashlt.org. Be a Judge: from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. or until the chili runs out, $10 allows you to taste and judge the chili and includes cornbread and a drink. Beer and dessert available for sale from Satulah Mountain Brewing Company and Cake Bar.
