I Rink I Can

Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park, in the center of downtown Highlands, has become a gathering place for the community. During the season, it offers live music, a farmers’ market, art and craft shows, and much more. In the colder months you’ll find lots to do there, too.
Santa will be visiting and the park glows with brilliantly colored lights. During the day you’ll find your friends and neighbors at the Highlands Recreation Department’s ice skating rink, twirling on sparkling skates and watching the fun while enjoying piping hot cups of cocoa or coffee. Don’t own a pair of ice skates?
No problem. They rent them at the rink and it’s family-friendly fun for everyone. You’ll see folks of all ages living out their fantasy of Olympic Gold, even if it takes a few times to feel steady on those thin steel blades. It’s all in good fun. Think Norman Rockwell.
Since we’re in the midst of the holiday season, start making a list of what you’ll need to comfortably spend time on the ice. Harkening back to the days of Rockwell (there’s a theme here), bundle up with your warmest gear, wrap that handmade scarf around your neck, and don’t forget the matching hat and mittens. Cheeks are rosy and smiles are huge. What’s not to love?
Remember the sensation of sliding across the kitchen floor in your socks? Multiply that times 10 and you’ll understand why ice skating is so very popular. You feel like you’re flying; and if you’re lucky, it will gently start to snow, making the whole experience even more magical!
The rink is open Thursdays from 1:00 until 8:00 P.M., Fridays and Saturdays from 1:00 until 10:00 P.M., and Sundays from 1:00 until 5:00 P.M. Mondays and Tuesdays are open for group bookings and parties, and there are special holiday schedules, too.
Load up the car and bring the family to the ice skating rink at Founders Park in the middle of downtown Highlands for some fun in the brisk mountain air. It’s a great way to entertain your guests, stretch your limits, and introduce little ones to the joy of skating.
