Literacy Council’s CORE Reasons

Do you remember the first time you successfully hung the ring on the hook playing the Ringmaster Bimini game?
You probably practiced and practiced and practiced and then one day – Nailed it! That feeling was elation and pride…and the desire to do it again and again.
That’s probably the feeling you got when you first started to read and all those letters come together in a meaningful way and you felt elated and proud and you wanted to read and learn more and more and more.
Still, it’s difficult and takes lots of practice. Lots of practice. Practice you get in school and, if you’re lucky, at home when your parents help you by reading to you and with you. It’s also practice you get in afterschool programs at The Literacy Council, where teachers and volunteers can give students time and attention helping them practice.
These are the core reasons The Literacy Council exists – to help children and adults improve their reading and learning skills and stimulate curiosity about the world.
After outgrowing its space at the Peggy Crosby Center, The Literacy Council identified larger and more accessible space in Highlands Plaza. Throughout the summer it has been renovating the space to meet the needs of an expanded Afterschool Program that includes one-on-one tutoring, an Enrichment Program made possible with community partners like the Biological Station and The Bascom, and ESL and GED classes for adults.
Bonnie Potts, Executive Director of TLC explains, “We target our Afterschool Programs and one-on-one tutoring to grades K-4 because they are so critical to igniting a love for reading which can in turn fuel kids’ curiosity and instill a lifelong desire to learn.”
The Literacy Council will introduce its new Learning Center with a Community Ribbon Cutting at the Chamber of Commerce’s October Business After Hours, on Wednesday, October 16, 5:30 to 7.30 P.M. Everyone is invited to the celebration.
