The 24th annual Tour de Cashiers rolls out on Saturday, April 29 at 8:00 A.M. from The Cashiers/Glenville Recreation Center on Frank Allen Road. Riders from across the southeast, and as far away as Idaho, make the pilgrimage to Cashiers for this annual event which has earned a reputation as one of the premier events in the southeast. The fresh mountain air, incredible mountain scenery, and rush of adrenaline afforded by the more than 10,000 feet of elevation change, make this race a favorite.
More than 300 cyclists dedicate their day to the challenge of one of several routes: Quarter-Century (25 miles), Metric (62 miles), Century (100 miles). Returning riders will be treated to complementary snacks and beverages at the Ugly Dog Pub on Frank Allen Road.
Pisgah Productions of Asheville will be lending operational support to the event by providing on-course surveillance, expanded rest stops, and en route mechanical assistance. Joining them will be community volunteers and regional fire departments, rescue squads, and local law enforcement agencies who work tirelessly to ensure the safety and comfort of the riders.
Local community sponsors provide financial underwriting for the Tour. This year Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, a Mission Health Hospital, is the proud Marquee Sponsor. Jackie Medland, Ph.D., RN, and newly appointed President and CNO of Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, views this particular part of western North Carolina as the ideal place for community members who seek opportunities to improve their health and wellness. “Whether it’s hiking the beautiful Dry Falls in Highlands, visiting the Cashiers Farmers Market to pick up some fresh fruit and vegetables for your next meal, or participating in the Tour de Cashiers, this area is full of activities that allow everyone to breathe our fresh air, get moving, and eat healthy,” she says. Medland adds that she, as a new resident, is also enjoying learning about the many benefits her new community offers.
