Reconnect with Nature

As North Carolina continues to slowly open, Highlands is starting to bustle with energy with the arrival of the summer season.
Year-round residents and summer visitors are trying to find ways to make this summer fun and as profitable as possible. Many are feeling safest using this time to explore natural beauty, which Highlands is never lacking in.
The wonderful people at the Highlands Biological Foundation, the Highlands Chamber of Commerce, and The Greenway Board are working tirelessly to come up with safe, fun ways for everyone to use the Greenway this summer. Their volunteers have been working hard to complete the Oak Street trail head, which will serve as the entrance to the Greenway.
Sonya Carpenter on the board of directors for the Highlands Biological Foundation explained, “The all-volunteer workforce at the Greenway has been working for nearly 15 years to develop a trail system in town that leads hikers to the best views and destinations such as Sunset Rock, the Highlands Botanical Gardens, The Bascom, the Rec Park and Mill Creek, the Highlands Historical Society, and the Kelsey Preserve. We work in tandem with the Town of Highlands, the Land Trust, and other organizations in town to create access to the wonderful green spaces within the community. Highlands is known and appreciated for the natural beauty of our landscape and the biodiversity of our ecosystem. The greenway presents an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to get off the beaten trail and experience the beauty of Highlands”
If you’re interested in exploring all of the beauty that Highlands has to offer, the Highlands Greenway website has a variety of amazing resources such as an easy-to-use map of the trails and historical sites in Highlands, native species lists, planning guides and history of both the Greenway and the town. Trails and nature around Highlands have a whimsical energy that can only be experienced.
Come out, reconnect with nature and yourself, respect it as the precious resource it is that we are all so lucky we are still able to enjoy.
