Regional Writers Read

Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library is hosting a series of presentations by local authors throughout the month of September.
Regional Writers Read will showcase their works with readings and discussions with their audiences. They’ll reflect on September’s theme of “Settling into Place,” with emphasis on the idea of place in their works. Each presentation is free and open to the public and will be held in the library’s Meeting Room at 2:00 P.M. Saturdays.
First up is author Edward “Bob” Fahey, who’s written the novels “The Mourning After,” “The Gardens of Ailana” and “Entertaining Naked People.” The works have won Fahey an international audience. He’ll be appearing on September 3.
Fahey will be followed by poet Kathryn Stripling Byer on September 10. She’s the author of the collections “The Girl in the Midst of the Harvest,” “Descent,” and “Coming to Rest,” among others. Byer has lived in Western North Carolina since receiving a graduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she studied with Allen Tate, Robert Watson, and Fred Chappell.
Author Tommy Hays will visit the library on September 17. Hays’ first middle grade novel, “What I Came to Tell You,” was chosen as an Okra Pick by the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance, as well as for the American Booksellers 2014 ABC Best Books for Children Catalog. His adult novel, “The Pleasure Was Mine,” was a Finalist for the SIBA Fiction Award in 2006, and has been chosen for numerous community reads and on National Public Radio’s “Radio Reader.”
On September 24, Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library will host Ken Chamlee and Karen Luke Jackson. Dr. Chamlee is I. B. Seese Distinguished Service Professor of English at Brevard College. His most recent book of poems is “Logic of the Lost.” Karen Luke Jackson’s oral history background and fifteen years of leading contemplative retreats provide a latticework for her writing. Her poems and stories have appeared in Alive Now, Ruminate, moonShine Review, The Great Smokies Review, Hungryhearts, Broad River Review, Kakalak, and two anthologies featuring Western North Carolina writers.
