Shelby Comin’ Round the Mountain

Highlands Motoring Festival rolls back into town June 6-9 this year and promises to be bigger and better
than ever.
The highlight of this four-day event is the Cars in the Park classic car show held on Saturday, June 8, at the Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park. Organizers expect 125 entrants and more than 2,500 visitors on show day.
This show draws an eclectic field of classic cars, many one-of-a-kind models. All pre-1990 cars are eligible for entry and are placed in one of nine judged classes.
This year’s featured marque is “The Cars of Carroll Shelby 1964-67.” More than 20 invited cars, representing every year and model, will tell the story.
Cobra fans will enjoy seeing an array of Cobras, including a 1964 USRRC Competitive Cobra, a 1965 289 Cobra and a 427 Cobra, among others. These and many other classics are not-to-be-missed.
Featured will be a corral full of Shelbys. For more than 50 years, the Mustang has enjoyed a performance image that was created by the Mustangs that Carroll Shelby produced in his factory in
California 1964-1967.
Chuck Cantwell will be on hand signing his book, “The Shelby Mustang Story,” and sharing stories about Shelby American. Mr. Cantwell was hired by Shelby as Project Manager on the Mustang program and was there working closely with such greats as Ken Miles, Peter Brock, and Phil Remington.
Racing enthusiasts will not want to miss the 1930 Bugatti T-35B chassis #4948 factory works race car. Its most historic appearance was the 1930 Grand Prix of Monaco where it finished third, driven by Guy Bouriat #16.
Jerry Scheberies’ and Walt Peterson’s “Mongoose,” a 1960 A.C./Bristol Ace, with an Oldsmobile F85 V8 engine and Corvette transmission will also be on hand. It was featured in Hot Rod magazine’s August 1963 edition. It was raced and shown throughout Southern California in the 1960s.
Another classic, the 1953 Siata 300 BC Spider, formerly owned and raced by Chuck Stoddard, will be there. This vehicle is well known as Tweety Bird and took first and second in class at Put In Bay in 1956 and 1957 respectively. In recent decades, this Siata has been vintage raced in the SVRA and VDCA series and restored by DL George Coachwork 2016.
