Autumn’s bounty reaches its crescendo at the local Green Markets in this season of mellow fruitfulness.
It’s fall y’all and crisp cool days, clear blue skies, chilly nights, and fires in the fireplace have us all yearning for more robust meals while staying mindful of the freshest ingredients.
Luckily, you can combine shopping for the area’s best ingredients with a day in the fresh air if you visit our local farmer’s markets. Locally Grown on The Green, Cashiers Farm Stand and local market, is held every Wednesday from 2:00 until 5:00 P.M. at The Village Green Commons, and Highlands Marketplace is held every Saturday morning at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park from 8:00 A.M. until 12:30 P.M. The items here are always fresh and are grown with love and pride.
Each of these fresh markets provides access to in-season fresh produce, locally produced meat, fresh dairy items and eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, jams, jellies, honey, pickles, freshly baked breads and baked goods, and homemade spreads and dips.
Hearty fall soups, stews and casseroles will be the highlight of your autumn meals when you shop for perfect locally grown ingredients- apples, sweet potatoes, butternut and acorn squash, cabbage, kale, and beets. A quick trip to these farmer’s markets and you’ll soon be making comfort food at its finest.
Sharing the spotlight in October are fall plants, mums, pumpkins, gourds, dried flowers, homemade crafts, and art for all your decorating needs. Bring warm autumn touches into your gardens and homes. And, as always, there’s a great selection of homemade crafts and art.
The farm-to-table concept is growing in popularity and these markets offer you easy access to the freshest products available. You’ll enjoy an opportunity to talk to the people who grow and produce the food, and probably pick up some helpful tips on how to store, prepare, and serve each product. Chances are they know the best recipes as well so don’t be shy and ask around to see who has the perfect pumpkin pie recipe.
These hardworking vendors are always happy to share their stories and you’ll come away with a greater appreciation for their labors of love.
Treat yourself to a unique shopping experience at one of these markets and welcome the taste and look of fall into your meals and home.
