Getting up early Saturday mornings is something to look forward to now that Highlands Marketplace is in full swing.
This local market opens Saturdays from 8:00 A.M. until 12:30 P.M. in Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park on Pine Street and you’ll want to arrive early for the best selections. Not only will you see your neighbors there shopping, but you’ll see local farmers, crafters, growers, artists, and bakers.
Stop by the baked goods tent to pick out yummy pastries for Sunday’s brunch and pick up some local honey and jams, too. You can’t fix brunch without eggs and you’ll find none better than the ones from local, pastured chickens. How about adding some delicious mushrooms for a tasty omelette and decorate your table with fresh cut flowers from Highlands Marketplace? Leave room in your basket for strawberries, blueberries, gooseberries, or blackberries when they’re in season.
The key words here are “in season.” That’s what you get when you shop at your local farmers market. You know your fruits and veggies haven’t been trucked from heaven-knows-where, but were probably picked by the person selling it to you. You’ll have access to the freshest harvests of the season, so that means the choices are constantly being rotated. Spring peas give way to snap beans and corn. Blackberries are replaced by pumpkins and tomatoes are a delicacy not to be missed.
Since it’s more than a farmers market, you’ll see local artists displaying their wares. You may also see local churches raising money by selling goods made by friends in foreign lands. Jewelry, soaps, fine art, and handcrafts are sold by the artists themselves and they’re happy to tell you what inspires them.
Highlands Marketplace is open rain or shine and welcomes leashed pets. It’s a great place to bring family and guests so make a note to set your alarm a wee bit earlier Saturday mornings. You won’t want to miss your local farmers market at Kelsey-Hutchinson Park from 8:00 A.M. until 12:30 P.M.
