Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” and 15‑year‑old Jessica Smith, daughter of Nicole Smith Russell of Cashiers, is proving just how powerful that belief can be.

Through focus, discipline, and a clear sense of purpose, she is already building an impressive record of achievement as a cadet with the Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force.

What began as a simple step outside her comfort zone has grown into a clear career path. Jessica has advanced to the rank of Airman First Class, a milestone that reflects not only her dedication but also the many hours she has invested in studying, training, and pushing herself to improve. Her growth from a quiet beginner into a confident, capable cadet speaks volumes about her determination.

Jessica’s accomplishments extend beyond rank. She has embraced the full scope of Civil Air Patrol training, mastering coursework in aerospace education, emergency services, and search-and-rescue operations. These are not casual pursuits; they require focus, resilience, and a willingness to meet high standards week after week. Jessica meets those expectations head-on.

Her passion began as a child when she’d watch planes overhead and tell her mom that was where she wanted to be one day, in the sky.

That passion became reality on December 23, 2025, when she piloted a Cessna 180 for the first time. After takeoff, she took control of the aircraft and flew for the remainder of the hour-long flight, an achievement many aspiring pilots only dream of at her age. It was a defining moment that confirmed her path forward.Jessica’s commitment is evident in her routine.

Each week, she travels to Asheville for intensive training that includes physical conditioning, classroom instruction, and hands-on skill development. She is preparing not just for advancement, but for real-world missions, situations where precision, teamwork, and composure can make a life-saving difference. Teamwork is especially vital, and Jessica finds the camaraderie and support of wingman Ellie Knightlinger and her fellow cadets to be a large part of her success.

To support her goals, Jessica attends the North Carolina Virtual Academy, allowing her to balance academics with the demanding training schedule she has chosen. Her long-term objective is clear: to attend the United States Air Force Academy and become a pilot in the United States Air Force.

With every hour of training, every lesson mastered, and every milestone reached, Jessica is turning ambition into action and setting a remarkable example of what focused determination can accomplish.

Or, as Jessica says, “Follow the runway, the sky is not the limit, it’s the beginning.”
