Generous Donors & Shoppers

Mountain Findings has once again generously granted donation requests to over 40 area non-profit organizations, totaling $181,700.
Located at 432 Spruce Street in Highlands, Mountain Findings was started in 1969 to provide for the donation and resale of household goods. They incorporated and were registered as a non-profit organization in 1972.
Since then, three major events have occurred: in 2002, Mountain Findings purchased a house on Spruce Street; in 2014, an expansion of the cottage was completed; and in 2017, due to increasing need for more space, a separate building was completed, which houses furniture.
Secretary Trisha Roellke explains that donation decisions are made at the annual meeting of the Mountain Findings volunteers, held in June. Prior to the meeting, the Board meets to determine the amount of money available for donations.
How are organizations selected? In most cases, an organization submits a request for a donation, citing the specific need and the estimated expenses.
“Recently, in part because of our financial ability to grant those requests, organizations are receiving the amount requested. In some cases, organizations do not submit a specific request and simply ask for continued support. We do not have a formal application but welcome letters or emails making specific requests,” Roellke says.
Mountain Findings is known for its selection of home goods, offering everything except the kitchen sink. And they may have one of those, too! It’s a great spot for treasure hunting, fitting out a guest room, replacing dated lighting, and stocking kitchens and bars.
Even though the store closes on October 31, donations continue through the remaining months in preparation for their May 1st opening of a new season. They have over 70 volunteers who work a three-hour shift each day. Several volunteers donate a large number of hours filling numerous shifts. Hours are 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., six days a week, closed on Sundays. And of course, new volunteers are always welcomed.
Roellke, who along with her husband has volunteered since 2002 said, “Our financial success is due to generous donors and shoppers – some shoppers come in several days a week because our inventory is subject to daily changes.”
