WestBridge Vocational was founded in 1976 by parents who believed their adult children with disabilities deserved the same opportunities to work, grow, and be active members of their communities as anyone else. What began as the Jackson County Sheltered Workshop has evolved over five decades into an organization that now serves approximately 140 individuals each year across Jackson, Macon, and Swain Counties, as well as the Qualla Boundary.
Over the years, WestBridge has adapted to the changing needs of the people and communities it serves. In 2019, the organization changed its name from Webster Enterprises to WestBridge Vocational, reflecting a renewed vision and continued commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for individuals with barriers to employment. Today, WestBridge helps people learn, earn, and thrive through community-based employment services, work-based learning experiences, training programs, and individualized support.
Unlike the sheltered workshop model of the past, individuals taking part in our facility-based employment programs earn at least minimum wage, with opportunities for wage growth based on productivity and performance. Most of the employment supports we provide happens directly within the community, helping individuals build skills, gain experience, and achieve success in integrated workplaces.
At its core, WestBridge’s mission is simple: Connecting people to opportunity. Through partnerships with local businesses, schools, colleges, and community organizations, we help individuals develop workplace skills, explore career paths, secure employment, and increase their independence. Programs such as Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS), Bridge to Work, Work Adjustment Training, Supported Employment, and Long-Term Follow-Along services are designed to meet people where they are and help them take the next step toward their goals. While each program serves a different purpose, they all share the same aim—helping individuals find meaningful paths to employment and participation in their communities.
One thing that makes WestBridge special is that we are often seen as a place that provides hope. Every day, we work with people who have been told “no,” who have struggled to find opportunities, or who simply need someone to recognize their potential. We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to contribute, earn a paycheck, and experience the dignity that comes with meaningful work. Watching individuals secure their first job, gain confidence, increase their independence, or achieve goals they once thought were out of reach reminds us why this work matters. Success is measured not only by employment outcomes, but by the confidence, purpose, and sense of belonging individuals gain along the way.
As Community Engagement Specialist, I have the privilege of helping build the relationships that make those opportunities possible. My work centers on connecting WestBridge’s mission to the broader community by developing partnerships with employers, schools, chambers of commerce, civic groups, colleges, and nonprofit organizations throughout Western North Carolina. Those relationships create opportunities for workplace experiences, employment placements, sponsorships, volunteers, and community support.
Equally important, they help raise awareness about the talents, abilities, and contributions of the individuals we serve. One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that barriers are often created by a lack of understanding rather than a lack of ability. By sharing success stories, creating connections, and encouraging businesses and community members to engage with our programs, we help open doors that may not have existed before. Every business that offers an opportunity, every community partner who collaborates with us, and every sponsor who supports our work becomes part of our mission in action.
I also had the opportunity to take part in Leadership Cashiers as a member of the Class of 2020. Although much of the program took place virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it offered valuable insight into the organizations, leaders, and resources that make the Cashiers community unique. One of the most important lessons I learned was that resources only make a difference when people know they exist and understand how to access them. That lesson continues to guide me to my work today. Whether I am introducing WestBridge to a new community partner, helping connect an individual to services, or creating opportunities for collaboration, I am constantly reminded of the importance of awareness, communication, and relationship building.
As we look toward the future, our mission stays the same as it was in 1976: helping people discover their strengths, connect with opportunities, and build meaningful lives in their communities. While much has changed over the last five decades, the belief that every person deserves the chance to succeed continues to guide everything we do. For 50 years, WestBridge has been creating opportunities, fostering independence, and building stronger communities. We look forward to continuing that work for generations to come.
